Georgia Opticianry School update Thomas Blair, Jr., LDO, ABOM Pres. Emeritus, OAG Sept. 2K11 __________________________________________________________________ It was announced at the end of the 2K10 winter quarter, DTC (DeKalb Technical College) has terminated the Opticianry program at the school. No new enrollments have been or are being taken, and students currently enrolled will be allowed an opportunity to finish their respective curriculums whether it is the degree or diploma. As a staunch advocate of educational progress for opticians, OAG is very disappointed at these turn of events. At the same it must be pointed out OAG had no role or control in the decisions made to terminate the DTC Opticianry program. Going forward in response to numerous inquiries and to the extent possible, the OAG will make known all related new developments as they occur, and that OAG is made aware of. Currently there are 2 schools of Opticianry in Georgia still operating. They are: Ogeechee Technical College in Statesboro which is a COA accredited 2 year degree program. The college also offers the opticianry diploma program as well. The other institution is Wiregrass Technical College in Valdosta. Wiregrass Technical College was formerly known as Valdosta Technical College. The Wiregrass program does not offer the associate degree program at this time, but offers a diploma program which is Georgia state board eligible. To the broader issue of alternate training options, the apprentice - state registration required - route is still intact. The criteria of the state apprentice registration and training route is spelled out in OCGA 43-29-7 ( para. b-d). As a professional courtesy to interested parties please contact OAG Pres. Emeritus Thomas Blair, Jr., for additional information @ Tblair3@bellsouth.net or 770 348-9955 (vm). |
